What is Breakbulk Shipping?
Breakbulk shipping refers to cargo that requires individual loading, unlike containerized cargo or bulk products (such as oil or grain). This type of cargo is typically packed into boxes, crates, bags, drums, barrels, and other small containers before being loaded onto the breakbulk vessel. Unit loads, secured to pallets or skids, may also be used. Breakbulk shipping is where cargo is transferred from one mode of transport to another, such as at a terminal where cargo is transferred from a ship to a truck.
Breakbulk shipping is suitable for transporting large or overweight cargo directly on a ship’s deck or hold, rather than in standard containers. Common examples of breakbulk cargo include construction machinery, steel structures, ship parts, wind turbine equipment, large excavators, transformers, and oil drilling equipment.
The main advantages of this mode of transport are flexibility and carrying capacity. For cargo exceeding the dimensions of a standard container (such as a 40-foot high cube), breakbulk shipping allows for individual loading based on shape and weight, eliminating the risks associated with breaking up the cargo for transport. These vessels are often equipped with large cranes capable of handling cargoes of hundreds of tons.
Breakbulk shipping is also widely used in project logistics, such as factory relocations, energy equipment exports, and large-scale construction projects. It plays an irreplaceable role in ensuring cargo safety and transport efficiency.
However, compared to container shipping, breakbulk shipping is more complex. It requires pre-planning loading and unloading plans, measuring cargo dimensions, securing lashings, and requesting dockside crane equipment. Therefore, choosing an experienced freight forwarder is crucial.
EGO Logistics is an expert in breakbulk shipping and customized global logistics. As one of the leading project logistics companies, we provide innovative solutions for complex cargoes.
Difference between bulk and break bulk
The core difference between bulk cargo and break bulk cargo stems from how the items are stored. While the terms are often used interchangeably within the industry, there are differences between them.
Break bulk cargo – This form of cargo is placed into small packages; whether that be drums, pallets, bags, crates, or any other slight container. When ships store this kind of cargo, they are often referred to as break bulk vessels and will be equipped to lift, transport, and unload these smaller packages.
Bulk cargo – This form of cargo is any loose form of storage. Instead of being separated into individual packages like with break bulk cargo, these products will be loaded directly onto the ship. Most commonly, bulk cargo is for minerals like coal or iron ore, or large amounts of farming produce, like grain.
Across these two categories of cargo, the only difference is their storage condition.
What is RO-RO (Roll-on/Roll-off) shipping?
RO-RO (Roll-on/Roll-off) shipping is a specialized ocean transportation method for transporting wheeled or movable equipment. Cargo can be loaded and unloaded directly onto and off the vessel via a ramp. Commonly transported items include cars, trucks, trailers, construction vehicles, buses, and large machinery.

RO-RO vessels offer convenient loading and unloading and high safety. Compared to traditional lifting methods, vehicles do not require lifting equipment during loading and unloading, significantly reducing the risk of cargo damage and loading and unloading costs. For companies exporting finished vehicles or construction equipment, RO-RO is an extremely cost-effective option.
RO-RO shipping can also be combined with other modes of transport, such as RO-RO + containerized or RO-RO + breakbulk cargo, making it particularly suitable for customers exporting finished vehicles and associated parts. Since cargo is not stacked on board, overall shipping time is more stable and manageable.
Note: For individual vehicles, except for shipments to Dubai, our company only handles transportation to the port in other countries, requiring the customer to complete customs clearance.

The Difference Between Breakbulk and RO-RO Shipping
While both are suitable for large or specialized cargo, breakbulk and RO-RO shipping differ significantly in their operation methods and scope of application:
In summary, if the cargo cannot fit into a container or is of unusual size, breakbulk should be chosen; however, if the cargo has wheels or a movable structure, RO-RO is the ideal option.
Major Ports for Breakbulk and Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO) Exports from China
China’s coastal port facilities are well-developed, with numerous international terminals capable of handling large-scale breakbulk and roll-on/roll-off (RORO) shipments.
Major Chinese export ports include:
Shanghai Port – With comprehensive facilities and global shipping routes, it is one of China’s largest breakbulk and roll-on/roll-off (RORO) shipping centers.
Tianjin Port – The largest port in northern China, suitable for shipments to the Middle East, Russia, and Europe.
Guangzhou Nansha Port / Shenzhen Yantian Port – South China’s export hubs, particularly suitable for exports to Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Lianyungang Port and Qingdao Port – Commonly used for the export of construction machinery and vehicle equipment.
Depending on the destination, freight forwarders will choose different shipping companies and routes to balance price and timeliness.
Cost Factors of Breakbulk and RO-RO Shipping
The cost of shipping cargo from China is influenced by a variety of factors, including cargo size, weight, port distance, loading and unloading difficulty, insurance, and seasonal demand.
Cargo Volume and Weight: The heavier and larger the cargo, the higher the cost.
Handling Method: Cargo requiring lifting or securing often incurs additional charges.
Route and Destination: Ocean routes to destinations such as Africa and South America are more expensive.
Insurance and Surcharges: Full insurance is recommended for high-value equipment.
Seasonal and Market Conditions: Freight rates fluctuate significantly during peak project logistics seasons (such as the fourth quarter).
Breakbulk shipping is typically charged by cubic meter (CBM) or tonnage, while RO-RO shipping is often charged per vehicle.
